Ancient molossoid-type livestock guardian breed developed in the Šar Mountains region, used for centuries to protect sheep from wolves and bears. First standardized by the Yugoslavian Kennel Club in 1939 and recognized by the FCI in 1957 as the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog—Sharplanina.
