Description

Medium to large athletic hound with a striking solid red coat, known for its speed, agility, and powerful scenting ability. Sleek and muscular, this breed was developed specifically for hunting raccoons and other game.

History

Developed in the American South, primarily in Georgia, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries by Scottish immigrants. Created from red-colored Irish Foxhounds and Bloodhounds to produce a fast, hot-nosed hound for trailing and treeing raccoons and larger game. The breed name is attributed to early breeder Peter Redbone. Recognized by the AKC in 2009.
