Athletic, streamlined, and powerful scent hound with distinctive brindle coat, known for its intelligence, courage, and exceptional tracking ability. Originally bred for big-game hunting including bear and boar.
Developed in the mountains of North Carolina by German immigrant Johannes Georg Plott from German Hanoverian Schweisshunds brought in the 1750s. Perfected over generations for big-game hunting in the Appalachian Mountains. The only coonhound breed not descended from foxhounds and official state dog of North Carolina.
