Ancient Dutch breed appearing in paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries as companion to noblewomen. Nearly extinct by 1970s but revived through dedicated breeding program starting in 1980s. Officially recognized by Dutch Kennel Club in 1999 and provisionally recognized by FCI.
