Developed by the Lacy family in Burnet County, Texas, in the mid-1800s as an all-purpose working dog for herding, trailing, and hunting, using English Shepherd, Greyhound, scent hound, and possibly coyote stock. Officially designated as the State Dog of Texas in 2005.
