The oldest of the German rough-coated pointing breeds, developed in the late 19th century from remnants of old German rough-coated bird dogs (Hühnerhunde) crossed with Pudelpointer and Griffon breeds. Standardized with focus on functional hunting ability as a versatile rough-coated hunting dog.
